Personal wellness is a big deal - but if you're like most, you likely don’t understand it well enough.
There is lots of talk these days about wellness – and for good reason. But, what really is it? When we talk about wellness, we’re not describing the absence of illness, but a state of general health and well-being. Think of wellness a meter that reads from 0 (death) to 100 (perfect health). If you’re at 0, this article doesn’t really matter, does it? You’re not at 100 either, although getting closer to this number will serve you well. We’re each somewhere between these extremes; some higher and others lower. Wellness levels reflect both your mind and body’s ability to respond to the stuff introduced by living. As we age, wellness levels typically decline by virtue of naturally destructive ageing processes. So too do our body and its systems’ vitality and ability to defend, protect and restore itself from the threats it encounters. Many argue maintaining wellness at high levels is critical to graceful ageing and we couldn’t agree more. That being said, wellness is far more involved than a jog in the park and tofu. Other events are occurring constantly in your body that often diminish the advantages of an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Until these are addressed that jog in the park is just as likely to injure as help you.
Wellness is also a reflection of your overall health. Wellness encompasses entire constellations of what’s required to live well. While exercise and diet are important, they’re only part of the picture. Food and exercise don’t combat many of the problems stress introduces, although they are certainly helpful. Stress impacts cognitive performance, physiology, psychology, and countless other -ologies profoundly. Tofu and that half-marathon mean little to inhibited immune systems, cancer, or heart disease. While physical health and nutrition are essential, they’re only part of a responsible wellness picture.
So, can wellness levels be improved? Absolutely! Unfortunately, the greatest weakness of wellness is that it’s a participation sport. The good news is the most successful wellness activities tend to be pleasurable. However, many feel they need to transform wellness into some prodigious struggle or herculean effort. That’s simply not how wellness works. The best wellness programs consist of simply doing what you love more often – just not the stuff on your sofa so much or time spent watching the news all day. Walks in nature, working in your studio or shop, a day spent shopping with friends, visiting an art fair or museum, entertaining guests, and things like fly fishing significantly improve wellness levels. Sounds like cheating, right? Well, it’s not. Moving, eating right, getting in shape, and keeping your brain active are essential elements of wellness that empowers your body to perform at peak levels longer and easier. A day spent fishing, flying kites, hiking, shopping, picnicking, or simply visiting a museum or art fair are excellent wellness activities - far more exciting and beneficial than heading off to a sweaty gym for hours. While healthy activities have individual benefit, when combined with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle, the therapeutic benefits are intensified for reasons we simply don’t understand fully. It’s like asking whether an orange is healthier than a vitamin C supplement. The orange is clearly a smarter choice thanks to its healthier nutritional value, micronutrients, and everything else it brings to the party that make important contributions to your body and the health of its systems. Wellness is very much the same. Skip the concentrated efforts for the continual ones. You’ll love the difference!
Thinking of wellness strictly as a physical and/or nutritional pursuit is a common yet flawed premise. There’s far more to wellness than eating well and getting regular exercise. Many are surprised to learn just how inextricably linked their brains are to health and wellness. As it turns out, a healthy brain and mind contribute dramatically to overall health. Most scientists and physicians agree brain wellness must be a priority of every wellness strategy because your brain regulates everything in your body. The problem is few people understand enough about brain wellness to do anything about it, which explains why it’s so dangerously underrepresented in health programs today.
At this point, I need to make a distinction between the physical brain and its work product. Brain health parallels physical health in terms of benefitting from nutrition and activity. That being said, what the brain does for living and how it impacts your health is what we’re most interested in. We call this cognitive wellness.
Like physical wellness, cognitive wellness can be illustrated on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is death and 100 represents perfect cognitive efficiency. You’re clearly not at 0, and 100 is impossible to reach – at least for humans. Each of us cognitively performs in a range defined by a variety of influences. Some days our minds are hot, and we exhibit higher wellness levels. Other days, not so much; our wellness levels fall. This organic cognitive wellness range between hot and not are called the Goldilock’s Zone. Everyone has one and everyone’s is unique.
How Life Environments Refresh!™ fits into a smarter cognitive wellness plan.
Making smarter nutrition choices and getting active are essential starting points for every wellness plan – but they’re only the beginning. Managing anxiety, stress and fear are top priorities in smarter cognitive wellness strategies because they have such profound influences on the rest of your body. The great news is managing these inhibitors can be a easy and simple process. Once existing stressors have been addressed and mitigated, one super-drug can deal with what remains in terms of cognitive stressors. We call this drug Vitamin N. You know it as nature.
Have you ever wondered why you feel better when you’re outside, on a beach or in a forest? That’s your brain on nature. Scientists have proven nature’s experience regulates critical cognitive processes far more effectively and safely than pharmaceuticals in most cases. While we don’t know all the reasons why, nature’s experience inhibits stress, anxiety and fear while enhancing our sense of well-being. The result is a naturally fresh, safe and effective cognitive reset with compelling benefits. With nature, you’re smarter, nicer, happier and higher performing in all aspects of our lives at work and home. Nature is a nearly perfect antidote to life’s stressors, which explains why most scientists agree that nature’s experience is an essential element of human wellness and a thriving life experience.
Unfortunately, nature is not always convenient or present. Life without nature is quite different; it’s simply less healthy. The problem for more than 80% of American adults is nature is either too inconvenient or impossible to access thanks to increasing urbanization and ever more hectic lifestyles. Scientists have observed dramatic increases in anxiety, stress and depressive disorders and greater incidences of serious conditions and diseases among those who don’t experience nature enough. Not only have scientists verified nature’s cognitive benefits, they have also revealed the profound costs of its absence in terms of wellbeing. The body of evidence is now so compelling, many physicians are writing prescriptions for walks in the park instead of often dangerous psychoactive drugs with questionable efficacy and often unknown mechanisms of action. Nature is clearly an element of human wellness. However, it’s not always practical.
Until now, leveraging nature’s experience required being there. There is simply nothing healthier than nature in the raw. Unfortunately, few offices exist in forests, surgery suites on beaches or workshops in meadows. To compensate for nature’s absence, many people turn to what they believe are reasonable reproductions of nature or gimmicks like “colors” of sound (white, black, grey, chartreuse, etc.) to ease anxiety and stress. The problem is conventional recordings and gimmicks simply aren’t nature – and your brain knows the difference - and responds accordingly. Studies have shown conventional nature recordings often frustrate the brain after only a short time, which is contraindicated for relaxation, refreshment and healthier sleep. These technologies provide nothing cognitively, and certainly have no ability to mitigate anxiety, stress or fear. So, what do you do when nature isn’t where you are?

In a nutshell...
Wellness demands a wholistic approach that’s comprehensive, effective and practical. Proper nutrition, and regular exercise are vital foundations of every wellness program. However, cognitive wellness represents the single greatest opportunity to improve health by inhibiting the most significant threats and enhancing life's experience. Smart products like Life Environments Refresh!™ are making many of the benefits of nature’s experience as close as your mobile device. That’s an enormous new advantage. However, the more important story is high-level wellness is becoming increasingly available a more practical reality.
