There is lots of talk these days about wellness – and for good reason. But, what really is it? When we talk about wellness, we’re not describing the absence of illness, but a state of general health and well-being. Think of wellness a meter that reads from 0 (death) to 100 (perfect health). If you’re at 0, this article doesn’t really matter, does it? You’re not at 100 either, although getting closer to this number will serve you well. We’re each somewhere between these extremes; some higher and others lower. Wellness levels reflect both your mind and body’s ability to respond to the stuff introduced by living. As we age, wellness levels typically decline by virtue of naturally destructive ageing processes. So too do our body and its systems’ vitality and ability to defend, protect and restore itself from the threats it encounters. Many argue maintaining wellness at high levels is critical to graceful ageing and we couldn’t agree more. That being said, wellness is far more involved than a jog in the park and tofu. Other events are occurring constantly in your body that often diminish the advantages of an otherwise healthy lifestyle. Until these are addressed that jog in the park is just as likely to injure as help you.

Wellness is also a reflection of your overall health. Wellness encompasses entire constellations of what’s required to live well. While exercise and diet are important, they’re only part of the picture. Food and exercise don’t combat many of the problems stress introduces, although they are certainly helpful. Stress impacts cognitive performance, physiology, psychology, and countless other -ologies profoundly. Tofu and that half-marathon mean little to inhibited immune systems, cancer, or heart disease. While physical health and nutrition are essential, they’re only part of a responsible wellness picture.

So, can wellness levels be improved? Absolutely! Unfortunately, the greatest weakness of wellness is that it’s a participation sport. The good news is the most successful wellness activities tend to be pleasurable. However, many feel they need to transform wellness into some prodigious struggle or herculean effort. That’s simply not how wellness works. The best wellness programs consist of simply doing what you love more often – just not the stuff on your sofa so much or time spent watching the news all day. Walks in nature, working in your studio or shop, a day spent shopping with friends, visiting an art fair or museum, entertaining guests, and things like fly fishing significantly improve wellness levels. Thinking of wellness strictly as a physical and/or nutritional pursuit is a common yet flawed premise. There’s far more to wellness than eating well and getting regular exercise. Some days our minds are hot, and we exhibit higher wellness levels. Other days, not so much; our wellness levels fall.
